EFOD Cycle Challenge 2023

On the 7th July, 50 intrepid individuals set off on our annual EFOD Cycle Challenge. An endurance event to test even the hardened cyclist – 200 miles in two days across some of the hilliest terrain Wales has to offer. Each day is comparable to a day of the tour de France – but without the good weather! Whilst the forecast eased from the 30 mph gusts anticipated earlier in the week, the headwinds remained along with torrential downpours throughout the ride. Inevitably there were punctures and mechanical failures along the way too. Many of the participants primarily cycled for commuting, and had never cycled this distance before. Despite these many challenges, every single person made it from Betws-y-coed in North Wales back to Cardiff.

A huge achievement – that wouldn’t have been possible without our unwavering support crew. A small team of just eight people kept track of all of the cyclists, provided regular food and water stops, assisted with mechanical problems, helped re-direct those astray from the route, and generally provide a good cheer. Undoubtedly, this team worked harder than those on the roads!

The goal of the challenge is to fundraise for EFOD Cardiff, to aid the construction of new Eco San latrines at Faith School. This year the team raised over £8,000 for the cause.
