Southwest

The southwest branch of EFOD was set up in 2008 and currently has graduate members from Mott MacDonald, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Arup and Edenvale Young.

Atutur Hospital

In 2008, EFOD Southwest became involved in the design of a medical waste incinerator for the Atutur Hospital in Kumi, Uganda.  Prior to our involvement, the hospital was dumping its medical waste in an open air pit promoting potentially harmful health and safety risks. In October 2009, six of our EFOD Southwest members travelled to Kumi to oversee the successful construction of the medical waste incinerator that we had designed.

The total construction cost (which included all materials, labour and flights for the EFOD construction team) was in the region of approximately £10,000.  All funds were raised by EFOD Southwest members through a series of fundraising activities throughout the year.  These included activities such as the infamous Three Peaks Challenge and a number of successful pub quizzes, raffles and bake sales.

The EFOD Southwest team are now scoping their next project for the Atutur Hospital.  This is likely to comprise the provision of a stable and secure water supply which the hospital desperately needs.  Engineering design is predicted to commence during 2010 with construction works forecast for 2011.

Training Facility, Ghana

EFOD Southwest has recently become involved in the design of a training facility in the village of Kpone Saduase in Ghana.  The facility will be used by the local community to develop self sufficiency skills, such as sewing classes, as well as occasional use by the community health visitor. The facility will comprise a single storey blockwork construction with cast concrete floor and pitched corrugated sheet steel roof.  The main room will be large enough to accommodate 15 sewing work stations and supported by a secure store room, two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and external veranda. Outside there will be an open cooking area and ‘long drop' toilet block.  Engineering design is predicted to commence during 2010 with construction works forecast for 2011.

Fundraising Activities

The funds required to deliver each project are raised by the EFOD team.  EFOD Southwest is currently planning the following activities to support further work at the Atutur Hospital and orphanage in Ghana.

  • Pub Quiz: 22 April 2010 at Toto’s in Bristol
  • Three Peaks Challenge: June/July 2010
  • Two Moors Way bike challenge across Devon: September/October 2010
